10. "Interpretation of the Gospel." Boris Gladkov
The work of a man who, by his own admission, "from an early age to almost old age (…) lived as an atheist." The official literary teaching of the Law of God in his youth turned Gladkov away from faith. However, the study of biblical science returned Gladkov to the Church. “The Interpretation of the Gospel" is Gladkov's main work, remarkable for its thoroughness, simplicity, depth, and individual, lively presentation. The book is a harmonization of the gospels (a detailed account of the gospel story). In the introductory chapter, an excursion is made into the main problems of the New Testament and isagogics. Sources of the work were patristic interpretations, studies of Russian exegetes. The author’s experience, his path from atheism to faith, determined the style and content of the “Interpretation of the Gospel” – a lively, personal speech about Christ. Considering literalism in the interpretation of the Bible one of the main reasons for falling away from the faith, Gladkov addresses the Holy Fathers: “Following the covenants of the Great Teacher of the Church (St. John Chrysostom), I try to comprehend the spirit of the Holy Scripture, its deepest meaning and do not dwell on the letter, on that the imperfect form in which the holy writer sometimes had to express his thoughts. ” Gladkov’s work is, in a sense, an exemplary interpretation: careful careful presentation of the text of the Scriptures, the use of biblical science, reliance on patristic theology, the simplicity of writing, and the personal attitude that pervades the entire book about the “subject matter”.
9. "Passion and virtues." Paisius Svyatorets
V volume of the collection of "Words" by Paisius Svyatogorets. This is not a systematic doctrine of passions and virtues, but a collection of old man's answers to specific questions.
“- Geronda, what is passion? – I think that passion is the power of the soul. God gives man not vices, but powers. But if we do not use these forces for good, then a tangalashka (demon) comes, begins to direct them himself, and they become passions, and then we grumble and blame God. But if we use these forces correctly, directing them against evil, then they will help us in our spiritual deed. ”
8. "Birds of Heaven." Simeon of Athos
Autobiography: the search for God in Soviet Russia, the beginning of monastic life, the apprenticeship of Elder Kirill (Pavlov), the making of unceasing prayer, life in Christ with all its difficulties, the search for impassivity, the Hesychast practice, life on Mount Athos.
“In describing the events that happened, I tried to show that the life of every person on the way to God is a spiritualized hymn about the heroic exaltation of the human spirit from the deepest fall to Divine love and union with the Lord Jesus Christ. In deep reverence, marveling at the mysterious fate of God, I humbly bow before the unfading radiance of God's wisdom and its incomprehensible Providence. ”
7. The "Fatherland". Ignatius (Brianchaninov)
“A careful reading of these sayings and stories can direct activity to the true path of God-pleasing, bringing the most faithful Today to this activity, bring comfort in the various sorrows that revolt in the soul, can nourish and maintain a peaceful and prayerful mood …
Whoever assimilates the doctrine of the Fathers proposed here, being in the midst of human society, he will acquire heartfelt silence. Whoever remains alien to this doctrine, in the solitary desert, will be indignant at the rumor of thoughts and the painting of dreams, will lead a worldly life. ”
6. "What is spiritual life and how to tune in to it." Theophan the Recluse
Perhaps the most valuable in the legacy of Theophan the Recluse is his letters. After all, the genre of writing itself involves personal communication, the specificity of the issues. In his letters, the great spiritual mentor Theophan the Recluse enters into the problems of his interlocutor and solves them precisely from the whole wealth of the spiritual heritage of the Church, whose great expert he was and, of course, from his own experience.
“What is spiritual life and how to tune in to it” is just an example of such theology, where the “theory” immediately, before our eyes, passes into “practice”. Perhaps this is the most famous book of Theophan the Recluse of this kind. In fact, this is a collection of letters about spiritual life, where theoretical questions alternate with practical advice.
The letters cited here, Theophan the Recluse writes to a young girl, "who does not want to marry, but also has not gathered her courage." A frank and detailed description of a person’s inner life. Here we see the whole path of man to God and all the dangers encountered on him.
5. Creations of Isaac the Syrian
“Those who have reached perfection have the following sign: if they are betrayed ten times a day for burning for love of people, they are not satisfied with this.”
Isaac the Syrian describes the path of a Christian to God, the path of liberation: repentance – turning from the slavery of sin to God, cleansing – acquiring freedom, perfection – the fullness of love and delight. The essence of the feat of the monk’s path is prayer — the aspiration of the soul to God, and, ideally, communion with God. Repentance is not a departure from the creation of God, but a turn of the mind, a way out of “this world” as a combination of passions, a system of enslavement, “laws”. Therefore, the path of the ascetic is the path of freedom, God acts in man "in the mystery of freedom." And the life of the future century, Isaac the Syrian calls "the fatherland of freedom." At the beginning, prayer is from lack, at the end is the fullness of joy. Prayer ignites love, and in a perfect monk love is immense. Few captured gospel love and compassion so much as Isaac the Syrian did: he prayed for animals, for the devil himself. And hell, according to Isaac the Syrian, is the love of God, which sinners perceive as pain and suffering, precisely because they are sinners – a sin in the rejection of love, in hatred of love.

3. "Letters of Balamut." C. S. Lewis
“Asceticism is the other way around”, a collection of letters from an experienced demon instructing his nephew on how to best lead a person away from the Truth. Behind the comic form lies Lewis’s deep insights about the errors in the spiritual path that we catch in life. Lewis's “Letters of Balamute” is a unique text, a masterpiece of both spiritual literature, fascinating “easy reading” and beautiful fiction.
2. "Interpretation of the Gospel of Matthew." John Chrysostom
One of the main patristic writings in general and from patristic interpretations of Scripture in particular.
“Matthew rightly called his work the gospel. In fact, he proclaims the end of punishment, the resolution of sins, justification, sanctification, atonement, allotment, the inheritance of heaven and affinity with the Son of God to all – enemies, ignoramuses sitting in darkness. What can be compared with such a gospel? God on earth, man in heaven; everything is in conjunction: angels made one face with people, people connected with angels and other mountain powers. Obviously, the ancient warfare ceased, God was reconciled with our nature, the devil was put to shame, demons were banished, death was connected, heaven was opened, the oath was canceled, sin was destroyed, error was removed, the truth was returned, the word of godliness was sown everywhere and the word of piety was planted, heavenly life was planted on earth, the mountain powers are in friendly fellowship with us, the angels constantly descend to the earth, and the great hope for the future appeared. That is why Matthew called his story the gospel, as if (letting it be understood) everything else, as for example. rich property, greatness of power, bosses, glory, honors, and everything else, revered by people for their good, are just empty words, and promises made through fishermen should be called in their own and primary sense the gospel. ”

The Tradition portal and the Tradition charity fund are, first of all, people. Without people, the site will not be updated, errors will not be fixed, and gradually everything will disappear. Without people, there will be no one to collect requests from those in need, no one will weed out scammers, no one will negotiate with hospitals and pharmacies. And those in need will be left without help.
Without people, there will be no one to record audio books. Without people, no one will look for authors for a blog, edit articles and talk about them. Nothing in the world works without people. And if God has no hands except ours, then we ourselves have no other hands.
Employees of "Tradition" are not heirs to wealthy wealth, nor are they rentiers or business owners. Among us there are several parents with many children, some rent apartments, some live where the war is going on. Almost everyone has families. Almost all of us live on the verge of poverty.
We do not want to give up our business because we need to somehow survive.
We still have many ideas – we want to make an interactive Bible, we plan a lot of changes in the blog and media library, and the work for the fund will never end. But we won’t be able to DO ANYTHING if we don’t have support, if we don’t know that tomorrow we will not be without salaries and with families in our arms. We need tomorrow, and no one but you can give it. Just sign up for a regular donation.
