Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos

Today, the Church remembers the Mother of God.

More than a thousand years ago, in the central cathedral of Constantinople, the holy fool Andrew saw that Her prayer, Her care, like a large veil, spread out over the people praying in the church. A large handkerchief that covers everyone with all the joys and anxieties, meaningless virtues and imaginary flaws, covers everyone who dares to ask for it.

Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos

This is a very vivid image of genuine maternal love – covering love, as it were, above the situation. And this image is even more conducive to addressing the Theotokos in prayer.

But such prayers are one of the bottlenecks of Orthodox theology. It is impossible to logically explain why we should pray to her or any other saints, because the reality of the Gospel story gives us a “direct channel” of communication with God. Christ teaches us to speak directly to the Father “in My Name” (John 14:13). We no longer need mediators, “for there is one God, one and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (Tim, 2: 5).

But despite the apparent logical contradiction, this is the reality of spiritual life. Everyone knows about her who asked for prayers for themselves or their loved ones in a difficult situation.

– Covers anyone who dares to ask for it.

The Virgin Mary is as really present here as a friend to whom I am sending a text message “something younger has completely ached, pray, please.” And just as real — as a disease, as a text message, as my friend, as the presence of God is with us here and now — prayer is just as real, Her prayer to God for everyone who asks Her about it.

Mother of God, thank you for your Son. Thank you for the opportunity to contact you in prayer, for your help. Thank you for being with us.
