Life as Thanksgiving – or 613 Church Rules

A full sacramental life is not the whims of the Typicon, but the human desire to make Thanksgiving, remind yourself and others about the importance of the commandments, the importance of love, and not embittered observance of the new 613 rules of New Israel.

"This trick is done by professionals." About thinking

***

It seems to me that prayers designed to maintain and strengthen feelings of guilt in a person are obviously not productive. They do not allow to move forward.

Every reminder of the misdeeds and sins committed by us must necessarily be balanced by a reminder of the closeness of God to us, of His willingness to help us move toward Him.

There is no place for hysteria.

Wrong? Do not think up dubious epithets for yourself: “Yakino Pig vomits his feces, Takos, and as much as I serve the sinful sin, and where can You get me!”, But look for ways to correct it. And these are not fasting and prayer, but actions opposite to sin.

***

Can we talk about the real, and not the fantasy connection of our rites and ceremonies of the Old Testament?

Hardly.

The artificial linkage to biblical roots, which arises in communities that have had nothing to do with Judaism for centuries, is only a consequence of the emergence of Christianity as the state religion.

Accordingly, Christianity began to fulfill the ancient roles of priesthood and endless sanctifications and ceremonies, increasingly ignoring the importance of keeping the commandments and repentance. The idea of sacrifice and the special conditions of its offering, purity / impurity, sacral / profane, and other interesting things unknown to the apostles appears.

Hence, monasticism as resistance to the dissolution of the revolutionary freshness of the Gospel in the hierarchy of values of antiquity, but essentially copied the forms of austerity of the pagan world.

A full sacramental life is not the whims of the Typicon, but the human desire to make Thanksgiving, remind yourself and others about the importance of the commandments, the importance of love, and not embittered observance of the new 613 rules of New Israel.

When purchasing a regular volume of spiritual instructions from one monk to another or a story about monastic exploits, remember the main rule: “This trick is performed by professionals. Do not try to repeat it at home. ”

Monastic life requires a lot of conditions, the first among which is life in obedience to the hegumen, the revelation of thoughts to the spiritual father, the daily liturgical life.

People who have labored for decades in monasteries do not always come into resonance with this literature. And a layman who lives in the wind of his own head can all the more easily become a toy of Satan.

Exception: your confessor's specific advice to you. No different in a similar situation. Only you.

– Lord! Is that you? Speaking with me in the voice of the storm and wind?

– Fool! This is just the voice of the storm and wind. I'm always with you. The speaker is always in your heart.

Today, an attempt to realize what it means to be an Orthodox Christian is bashfully called "a return to the spirit of the early Christian Church."

Although the Church of any era can have only one Spirit.

It is necessary to “return” to Him.

And from the history of "early Christianity," many take only beautiful, delicately ignoring the very ugly, such as pogroms of pagan temples and Jewish synagogues and the murder of Hypatia.

In essence, what happens should be happening: a new self-consciousness of the Christian is being created, and at its core, Christians choose from history what they consider necessary today.

If there is a Spirit, this is normal.

When a person is eager to hear the Lord, he will hear the words he needs for repentance, not only in the worst preaching, but even in casual conversation.

"Rainbow is still a natural phenomenon." About the topical

***

By and large, according to the Gospel account, it is not so important that we write here about conflicts with our neighbors. (Although we justify the word and condemn our word. So it’s also important, of course.)

Another thing is important. Are we ready, without reproach and slogans, to assist the needy representative of the neighboring people? Will our ideology close the door of mercy in the soul or not?

***

As a rainbow for me, still a symbol of the covenant between God and people and a magnificent natural phenomenon, and not usurped, you yourself know who the symbol is, you know what, and the word / concept “liberal”, “liberal” for me is a sign of a person’s desire for personal freedom, independence from the "systems" and respect for the person, not a curse or a sign of hatred towards Russia and everything Russian, connected with servility to the "West".

***

Orthodox joke

In general, it is amusing that the strict adherence to fasting, and not the ability to curb hatred, stinginess, pride, and pride, has become the criterion of true Orthodox in Russia for a long time (from the 11th century).

Orthodoxy itself is perceived by many even inside the church fence as a religion of endless posts and restrictions that have long “buried” the essence of the holidays, for which posts are supposedly being prepared …

And by the way, according to the Apostolic decrees (IV century) “Petrov” fasting, for example, lasted one week after the seven-day celebration of Pentecost (V 20. 14-17).

I think about temples. What should they be: rich, poor, beautiful, scary?

On the one hand, yes: the “community” is primary. The burning of the Holy Spirit in people is the authentic temple, where all the sacraments of the Church are performed.

Therefore, the building itself is unimportant, even though the cafe is leased for an hour – they gathered, sang, tasted, drank and went with satisfaction to go do good with the money raised.

But what is a community? This is a modern “small group of parishioners around the beloved father, with evil eyes glaring around, they say, we’re all at home, come through, we don’t need others! someone else's father is an empty place, and ours – the light in the window and the right path lit up for us "- and is there a community? To this we must strive? Come on!

The community today, as a rule, is a get-together around a beloved guru with all the signs of “his” and “alien”. There are exceptions, of course. Confirming the rule.

And try to speculate in this vein on medicine: we rent a cafe to receive a doctor for an hour. The doctor, in order to survive himself and the family, works as a loader and heals in his spare time from real work. Not that? Not that.

“And this is all we do not need” – more and more voices are heard. “We just need to get together and take communion, and the rest of life will show the beauty of Orthodoxy!” Well, you do not need. And many need. To the eye, bumping into the domes with crosses, at least occasionally reminded us of eternal life.

So it turns out that for 1000 years in Russia the beauty of Orthodoxy is shown only by temples and a few saints.

The temple has long been not just a place to gather the community. This is an architectural testimony to the otherness of the Church, its fundamental difference from all other human structures. This is evidence of a vertical dimension of life, not just a horizontal one.

Temple of sv. Tatiana in a residential area of St. Petersburg

No matter how the skyscrapers are decorated, the quarter lives only when there is a temple in it, which differs from other buildings. When there is something in it besides "I."

Yes, kindergarten, school, hospital, shopping center with laundry – no doubt. But the temple. Not as a ritual place, where rarely go to note the changing number of relatives, but as a place of Sunday prayer.

The temple as an open book speaks of God, even when priests and laity are silent or live contrary to their words.

The temple is also a haven for restless souls who are too early to dive into the Sunday services, but already there is a need for a quiet prayer in a different space of life, free from the lead abominations of everyday life.

Yes it is expensive. Yes, people have very little money now. Yes, there is, where else to spend. For example, sick children should be treated.

But why due to the construction of temples, but not clubs, football arenas, paid garages, half-empty shopping centers? Do priests treat sick children? Why do you need to grumble about the construction of the next temple, and not to petition to the richest pharmaceutical companies and doctors, demanding free treatment for children?

Why is the money for the treatment of children need to collect on the Internet?

You absolutely fairly answer that this is a manifestation of humanity. In a sense of the word, this is what we need more, not the sick and the dying. This makes us people, not just learn to talk and dress animals.

But animals do not build temples. This is the lot of man. And one of the manifestations of humanity.

"Sanctified" – and nothing else is needed. About the Church and the sacraments

***

They asked here, is it not blasphemous to think that the Church offers us something wrong? For example, the obligatory confession before communion?

I think that is not sacrilegious.

The Church itself does not offer this to us. In the sense that this is not stated either in the Gospel or in the resolutions of the Councils.

This is a custom that was formed several centuries ago. Yes, for human life it is a lot. It seems that "it has always been like this." But compared with the 2000-year history of the Church itself, this is a temporary phenomenon.

Why is this? Because the nature of the people who make up the Church is damaged. And one of the manifestations of this – the desire to get as much as possible anything with a minimum of effort.

Hence, the utilitarian attitude to church sacraments and customs: “I do a simple, but filled with mystical sense action, and in return God gives me health, success, help in matters (not even always coinciding with the commandments),” and so on.

See:

I confessed – you forgave sins and removed.
Communion – grace received. Children will not be sick, and in general, from the evil eye.
I was plunged into icy water at Baptism, my sins were forgiven and you don’t need to go to the temple.
And so on.

That is, everything is already done: the rite was performed, it was “consecrated,” and nothing more should be done. What are the commandments, love, the transfiguration of the soul? What for? "The sacrament will do everything for you."

“I am Orthodox, but I don’t go to church and I don’t need intermediaries,” the uncle writes a stupid phrase and is very offended when they communicate with him as if he were stupid. Why are you an Orthodox? Mum baptized as a child? Oh, well, well …

Just like in the rest of life.

They eat everything, get fat and complain of loneliness. “What else is it to eat to lose weight?”, “Oh, love me like this / such for infinite spiritual wealth, and you will love anyone so beautiful”. They are chasing the courses “How to learn English in 10 days and pump up the press without getting up from the chair”. Attend circles and meetings to "change the character and learn …".

And so the majority in everything.

You have the right to disagree and argue, but too many such examples in life. And the reverse – the unit. Where our true treasure, there we will sooner or later find ourselves. It is a pity that most often it is a trough …

If we take the Confession as a regular cleansing of the “dish of the soul of dirt”, then there remain a lot of questions, the answers to which are simply not there. The most important of which is: what kind of purification is it, if in the overwhelming majority of cases it does not automatically purify a person who regularly takes communion and confession?

What then is Confession?
First of all, this is the secret of God-communion, and not something utilitarian, not some kind of service or device for a comfortable spiritual life.

In my opinion, this is the mysterious release of his hands, bound by a vice, for the purification of his life. We must work hard. And this has yet to be done after confession and communion.

This is another attempt to trust the Lord and trust Him with the purification of our lives.

But this does not mean that we move away from the analogue "cleansed of sin." Otherwise, there would be no need to admit to being the worst of sinners before communion.

Here, they say, it is necessary to "imitate the saints." And how can this be done? How to imitate Mary of Egypt, Seraphim of Sarov, the righteous Job?

“To imitate Seraphim and Mary is to leave the world, to go into monasticism. Job – endure sorrows patiently. ”

But it is ridiculous and absurd. Only a handful of millions of Christians can “imitate” the saints. And is it worth mentioning that tens of thousands went to monasticism, and we glorify only a few of them.

It means, after all, that they did not glorify them for monasticism as such, and that this is not what they should be “imitated” for the most part.

Here's how to imitate Saint Helena? To be born a Gentile, to give birth to an emperor and to find the Cross of Christ in Jerusalem? But why? That is what was already done a half millennium ago.

We have developed a strange notion of imitating the saints as an external copying of their life path. But you have to strive to burn them with the love of God, which prompted them to choose this or that way of life. The details of life will inevitably be different, but the essence is the same.

And it is available to all, without exception – to monks, and laity, and empresses, and housewives.
