How to learn from children

I congratulate you on the first of September – the beginning of the new school year. In a good way, he should give us new knowledge, discover in the world what we did not know about him, help to see something important in ourselves and others. Some of the children are waiting for this first day of study with impatience, while others, on the contrary, are thinking – when will they, these first September, finally, end!

But we, adults – we also learn with our children. We also go through our school – the school of communication and love.

I dedicated ten years to working with children and teenagers, now I am engaged in pedagogy in high school, and have seen many happy families. I can say: with all the bustle of modern life, today it is possible to live in such a way that the school years of a child become for parents a time of growth in wisdom and understanding. What is needed for this?

Drop of interest

Sometimes we are required to just a drop of interest in what is interesting to the child. A little time to listen, without interrupting. I can not understand everything, I do not agree with everything, but it is very important to give a person the right to his own opinion, to give him to be heard – from an early age.

Often parents are most concerned about the purely practical questions of tuition assistance. Someone is looking for professionals to help. Someone thinks that he can help himself – all the more so that now practically in any discipline one can find a lot of literature. But I think that knowledge of objects and the skill to solve puzzles, no matter how difficult they may seem, is only half the battle.

Little surprise

More importantly – the ability to wonder, to infect with interest and enthusiasm. The script for the film “Key without the right to transfer” comes to my mind. Remember, one teacher infects children with her love for literature, and indeed to life in general, while the other just leads a boring lesson and envies this young one. The joy of discovery – how long has it been with us the last time? Do we remember how this happens? Can we share this? And without this, the price for us, parents and teachers!

A little patience

I will also say about another facet of pedagogical mastery – the ability to tolerate the weakness of an emerging personality, without blaming for this weakness, believing that this is temporary. For example, the attention of a child is weaker than ours, and it may seem altogether careless. Meanwhile, the reluctance to learn a certain discipline can be associated with unpleasant feelings that accompany this discipline (did not work out with the teacher, or something else). Do we not get annoyed when everything seems elementary, but he does not understand everything? Is it possible to see in a child not a loser, but a person to whom much has been given, but perhaps he hasn’t yet groped for it?

It turns out that the school years of the children are, first of all, the time of parenting and teacher education.

Fostering light strip

My beloved Simon Soloveichik has a paradoxical example. One of his friends was brought up, if I may say, myself. His father did not sit with him on the lessons, did not lead long pedagogical conversations. He worked a lot, even at night, and a strip of light, making its way from under the door to his father’s study — this was the ray of light that raised the child. As a result, he grew up, according to Soloveichik, an educated person, loving work — a personality has grown.

It turns out that our own example has the greatest impact on children. Question to us: were we able to build a holistic life, a life where there is a place for creativity, joy, trust in each other, ability to cope with difficulties and support each other in difficult moments – and thanks?

Who to learn from?

Friends, if something of these thoughts touched you – do not thank me, because it is not mine. I studied these simple truths with all my pupils, and also by reading wonderful authors, many of whose works are in the Predanie.ru media library: Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh, Janusz Korchak, Leonid Panteleev with Anton Makarenko, Simon Soloveichik, already mentioned, Archimandrite Viktor ( Mammoths) …

And today I invite you to learn together how to be an example for a child, at the pedagogical seminar of the College “Heritage”, which this year will begin its work from October. The seminar is held for the third year, it is designed for parents, youth workers and teachers of Sunday schools. We discuss the organization of the educational process, learn to read the Holy Scriptures with children and, using the examples of ordinary children's literature, discuss spiritual issues, through play and movement to inculcate the skills of internal self-regulation. But the first and most important thing that people usually learn from us is to wonder again and thank God.

Classes are broadcast, so you can participate in them via the Internet, but in some meetings it is recommended to participate in person. Come, we will wait!

Since the first of September you! If you have questions – scream them in the blog, I will answer with pleasure.

Vladimir Strelov,
Rector of the College "Heritage"

Help is needed

Preparing children for school

Education has already begun, but we continue to receive requests for the purchase of office supplies. In Russia there are hundreds, if not thousands of families, for whom spending several thousand rubles to prepare a child for school is a huge problem. And what if there are several children?

You can give several children a happy September 1 and the joy of learning.

Recommend

"The mystery of childhood" archim. Victor (Mamontov)

This is not a scientific treatise on pedagogy. “The Mystery of Childhood” is a lively dialogue in which various issues are raised: how to raise a child in freedom, what family prayer can be, how to acquaint children with the Holy Scripture, how God acts in the life of a little person, how to overcome the problems of adolescence, choice of profession, life partner …
In person about. Victor combines a deep inner culture and education (he is a candidate of philological sciences) and the gracious experience of eldership; his interlocutor I.Ya. Grits is one of the smartest teachers who knows how to ask the right questions. It only seems that this is a book about children; it is worth reading to every adult (and much earlier than high theology or asceticism, to which you still need to grow). Written at the beginning of the two thousandth, perhaps this is the most current book on Orthodox Christian pedagogy.
